Paysages Éphémères 2009
Complet No Vacancy

The 2009 Paysages Éphémères, organized for the second consecutive year by independent curator Stéphane Bertrand, presents Complet No Vacancy, which will take place on Mont-Royal Avenue from the 2nd to the 26th of July. For five years, Paysages Éphémères has created opportunities for artistic expression in the urban space by transforming it into a site for creation. Through the lens of ephemeral art, residents and visitors in the Plateau area will have the opportunity to view the city from new perspectives.

Complet No Vacancy deals with the theme of vacation in the city and will present a multi-dimensional creative experience through the work of visual artists, architects and designers. Six installations will be set up in Parc des Compagnons-de-Saint-Laurent, one intervention will occupy the Place Gérald-Godin, while another will take place in front of the Sanctuaire du Saint-Sacrement. Non-narrative, short films will be screened on two evenings in the park. The public is also invited to visit la Maison de la culture Plateau Mont-Royal and the platforms at the Mont-Royal metro station to discover the full artistic range of Complet No Vacancy.

July 2nd to July 12th

Coin du banc - Alexandre David
David has created a mobile piece of furniture/object, which can be transformed, unfolded and opened up, offering a seat for passersby.

Phare de ville - Patrick Beaulieu
Phare de ville, an installation using car headlights, will liven up the park’s night landscape with beams of light.

Motel Rita - Rita
Rita works in the area around the park furniture. Three street signs will show if this urban furniture is being used or not, by indicating “no vacancy” or “vacancy”.

Package Deals - Uta Riccius
Using recycled materials, Riccius will create microhabitats for urban fauna in the natural environment of the park and its surrounding area.

Prendre place - Yannick Pouliot
Pouliot brings his most recent artistic production outside the gallery space. He will take over the site of a modern concrete picnic table, and add to this his own furniture of a contrasting style.

July 2nd and 9th, 9:30 pm

DÉRAPAGE Screening of non-narrative short films
DÉRAPAGE, a group of young artists and producers coming from the design field present two evenings of film screenings in the park.

July 2nd to 26th

Labyrinthes - José Luis Torres and Geneviève Caron
A series of twelve wooden modules will be placed in the park in such a manner as to suggest certain routes to take and vistas to observe, encouraging people to slow down the frenetic pace of modern life.

CaLe parvis - Alec Suresh Perera and Julie Charbonneau
In this project a wooden floor will be installed over concrete stairs and a sidewalk, creating a court area to mark the space at the foot of the Saint Sacrament Sanctuary.

Voisins - Francis Montillaud
This installation pays homage to the 1952 short animated film Voisins/Neighbours by Norman McLaren. The homage, created mainly of two small playhouses, will enable the viewing of this director’s pivotal film.

Ephemeral art manifestations such as Paysages Éphémères are becoming more and more frequent on the international contemporary art scene. In fact, in Madrid, New-York, Paris, Berlin and many other major cities of the world, the installation of temporary art works has become common practice. In an economic context that is increasingly oriented towards creativity, these installations become an important element for indicating a city’s international rank. They increase public accessibility to art, create greater exposure for artists’ work, and improve the quality of urban life.
